A Dios Momo
by Charlotte Schilling
"God Momo has sent me the idea to this film", says Leonardo Ricagni, the director of the film "A dios Momo" during the question'n'answer-session after the screening.
The film is about a boy named Obdulio. His life changes during the carnival all of a sudden. Carnival alters everyone, brings happiness and fortune, sadness and illusions. It fascinates everybody - magically.
Usually, Obdulio gets up very early, eats his breakfast and goes to his kiosk, where he collects the papers he has to sell during the day. In Uruguay, child labour is a matter of course. But a curious thing about Obdulio's situation is that he can't read or write. The letters in his newspapers are strangers to him.
On his way home he encounters a peculiar, gnome-like being. It leads him to a Restaurant, where a murga is dancing their carnivalistic performance. Then Obdulio comes to a print shop. It is dark, only one person is in this room. Machines clatter. This man controls them at the push of a button. All this is new for Obdulio, almost eerie.
But this man will lead him into the world of music that comes from paper and literature and teaches him how to read and write.

A mystical, very dark film. It is well cast and also very interesting, informative and especially imaginative. At times it is a little longbreathed.
