"Because I'm a young mother, people think I'm not capable of looking after my child. Everyone is amazed when my son is happy and well. I haven't been checked by childcare for a whole month now, and he's still alive!"
At age 17 you still have your dreams. In the case of Sandra, Jasmine and Jennifer they are called Jason, Armando and Tanijsha, and the eldest one is just 18 months old. Sandra is planning a small family with her boyfriend Marcel; her second child is on the way. Jasmine has found three godparents for Armando and hopes to finally have a calm, relaxed year. Jen- nifer thinks that a mum and dad should live together, but it just didn't work out with Mwathi. When you are practically still a child and pregnant, it's not only your belly that grows.
„Against all odds“ brings nothing new to the surface. It floats on the wave created by the first teenage mom shows. And just like MTV’s ,,16 and pregnant”, it tells no new stories. You might think that it could be interesting because it is Swiss and they live differently, but no. The interesting thing about this film is how it deals with love. The love the girls receive from their family along with amazing amounts of support. The love they are (some of them a bit in the dark) searching for in partners. The love they have for their children, that make all of them feel like something is wrong when they are not with their child. The three mothers deal with their new circumstances in very different ways, partly because of their very different opportunities, but nonetheless have to face the same everyday decisions and the story gets somewhat exchangeable. When the one who sent her little boy away does the same as the one who stays home for a third year, it becomes clear that no matter how you cope with having child, your life will still go on and it is manageable in all ages and in many ways to live a proper life.
