“Sit down. What did you see out there?” “Nothing.” “Something happened. I went back the trail today. There was a spot where the tracks are messed up like somebody dug up the snow.”
The sun rarely sets where Qualli and his best buddy Aivaaq live. In their settlement in Alaska nothing can be hidden. Everyone knows everyone. The young men race around on their snowmobiles and have rap battles at parties. During a seal hunt the white snow gets covered in bloodstains. The secret which the two friends are sharing, is getting out of control. The question is whether the cold currents will carry the truth back to the shore or remain buried under the ice for ever.
The acting is really bad. The story is not believable, and the light seems surreal as well. Else it is a good film. “On the Ice” seems to me like a home-movie project. The story is thin, build up like a short film, with only one plot, which makes everything a bit boring, and the same two actors definitely can not carry being on screen for such a long time. To me the film is clearly marked by the fact that it is a prolongation of a short film. I thought it seemed like a short film with way too much rambling about the same and the same, before I found out that this was actually exactly what it was. The film does have some qualities though, the amazing geographical environment is very impressive, and everything that has to do with how the characters are bound to this special place they live in, is interesting to follow. You are entertained while watching, but quickly will forget it again.
